The Return

Los Cabos is one of those places that one never forgets, although many of your memories may be blurred. This mental haze, which clouds the mind, is a result from a sensory overload like no other. The sea, the flowers, the sun, the panoramic views, and yes tequila all play their parts in capturing you mind and heart. The song Cabo Wabo, by Van Halen, rings true with the lyric…  Cabo15-001

“There's a sleepy town, south of the Border
If you go there once, you'll be there twice”.

If one has experienced this legendary party town, they understand the meaning of these words. It has been 9 years since our last visit, and we return once again to be with our friends, Vic and Amy. Our paths crossed for the first time many moons ago in Greece. Our first encounter with them was on the airplane as we taxied to the gate in Athens.  After a wonderful week together on a 140 foot motor/sail with one crazy night on the back of a boat, which involved the consumption of a large amount of ouzo, Vic and Amy were friends for life and knighted with the nicknames - Rum and Sugar.

We are now separated geographically by the entire girth of the United States, and unfortunately, our visits have been all to infrequent. Yet when we do rendezvous, laughs and good times are guaranteed to be had by all.

Rum and Sugar have a strong pull and long family history with the Peninsula de Baja California.  Amy's recollection, told in descriptive stories of this paradise are vivid and captivating.  One of my favorite memories (albeit it may blurred) from our last visit was listening to Amy tell about her childhood vacations to the region. Her father, a WWII fighter pilot, would fly the family down the Pacific Coast landing in small towns as they journeyed the 1200 miles to the southern tip of the peninsula. They would sleep on the deserted pristine beaches or stay in little shacks along the coast. What an adventure that must have been!

Although there have been many changes over the years, the scenery still remains breath taking.

Amy’s love for Los Cabos can be heard in the words of each memory. Over the years, the family remains closely connected with Mexico. One her brothers in fact is a long term resident of Cabo San Lucas, and her other brother recently retired to this paradise south of the border.  We hope to see them both again on our upcoming visit.  Yes, the Mexican white sand runs deep through their family.

We embark on this vacation with excitement of reconnecting with friends and having new adventures.  I know there will be many photo opportunities that will present themselves on this trip, but my dream shot would  be able to snap a picture of the elusive green flash as the sun falls into the Pacific!  Neither, Janet or I in all of our travels have ever seen this light show phenomenon.  To see the flash would be treat – to capture it as an image would be unbelievable.

Please follow along as I will try to provide you a peek into the beauty Los Cabos, Mexico through pictures and stories.

  4. I just bought the ingredients for the "last word". I will be introducing it to Joost as soon as we get back to Gualala. We are still in Windsor with the Dutch cousins. The vineyards are gorgeous. All golden and nearly translucent. Thinking of you guys.
Can't figure out to all my name to the list.

    1. No worries... I know who you are! :)
Enjoy the cousins and the beautiful wine region, but we are headed for warm weather and blue water.
I am EXCITED - only 18 hours until we leave for the airport.

Oh yeah some following might not know about the Last Word...
Here is a link that will tell you all about the drink, and you may even recognize a name.

I did change the name last night as the election adds began to slow down.
I called it a "Thank Goodness". We had a few limes left on the counter and I could not let them go hard while we were gone. So I made a Cabo prep drink!
